Music In Kid’s Programs

In the last article we discussed the importance of kid’s programs in your church or youth organization.  While it is important to have a kids program, it is imperative to have programs that captivate and excite kids.  One of the essential part of a dynamic kids program is music.  You must select music that kids like and has a catchy tune that soon become ear bugs.

Have you ever found yourself singing out loud while you were alone or have a song run through your head?  Of course you have!  These songs can be a good influence or a bad one depending on the beat and the content of the lyrics.  That is why it is important to be careful when exposing yourself or kids to good music with wholesome lyrics.

Music can drive the message of the lyrics quickly and deeply into your psyche.  Remember back when you were learning your ABC’s?  What did the teacher or your parents do first?  They taught you a song!  The song was simple and just listed the alphabet in order and you sang along to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.”

After singing it just a few times you had it down!  You may have gotten some of the letters wrong but soon after repeating the song again and again you got them right.  This method of learning is proven to be the best way to influence your thoughts and actions as they quickly become part of your mind set and that soon becomes your character which influences your attitude.

Music can also be used to change your moods and attitudes.  Are you feeling sluggish or depressed?  Put on lively music and soon you will be feeing much happier!  Are you nervous or anxious?  Play something calm and soothing and see how quickly your mood matches up with the songs being played.

Music can also help you recall things and events in from the past.  Have you ever been listening to the radio when on comes a song that touches you in such a way that you instantly recall where you were, who you were with and what you were doing when you first heard it?  You can recall in vivid detail the event that surrounded that day and time.

All these same things happen when you introduce someone to music and lyrics that provide good morals.  You don’t have to be an accomplished singer, or professional musician,  to help make this happen.  When I learned the ABC song we just sang it a cappella.   It was fun and it helped us to retain the message which was the alphabetic line up.  To this day when I am trying to alphabetize something I find myself singing that song through in my head.

Be sure to choose age appropriate fun songs with a message in all your programs and kids will look forward to coming to your program each week and will anticipate the fun they will have all week long.

Until next time, remember that God is always looking out for you.
